We know our readers remember these cars well. They tell us it is “a beautiful vintage Thunderbird that has had one repaint in its original color and still retains a stunning original interior.” It has the automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power top, optional leather upholstery and Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels with radial wide whitewall tires. It comes with the J code option which designated the original 430 Lincoln engine. Orlando Classic Cars tells us this one is a California car with just 76k miles. This week, Orlando Classic Cars in Orlando, Florida is offering one of these phenomenal classic Thunderbirds for sale. While only 1,168 of the Thunderbird Special 430 convertibles were produced, doubtless their success in NASCAR racing promoted a record 67,000 total sales for Thunderbird that year. Fame at the track made the Thunderbird seem like Ford's "muscle car" of the future. When Ford Motor Company decided to make a play in NASCAR they were betting on the combination of a Lincoln 430 engine in a "square body" Thunderbird to dominate at the race track. Arguably, the Ford Fairlane proved to be Ford's real meal ticket in NASCAR that year, but the legendary Thunderbird Special 430 engine did win six NASCAR races for Ford. With more photos and information promised, Orlando Classic Cars this week posted a preview of a 1959 Ford Thunderbird Special 430 Convertible, the car Ford chose to dominate NASCAR.
